West Sussex is a county on the south coast of England, immediately south of London and Surrey. It also has borders with two other coastal counties: East Sussex and Hampshire. The county town is Chichester, a cathedral city of around 107,000 residents.
The county only obtained its own county council in 1888 (along with East Sussex) even though both counties have existed since the 1100?s. Until this time both counties were still administered by a central Sussex county council.
